46re wont shift out of first
Dec 08, 2005 · The 97 Suburban would not shift from park last night in the driveway. I tapped the brake pedal several times, thinking the switch that prevents shifting from park without the brake on was bad. Nothing helped, I tried moving the tilt up and down and turning the wheel back and forth, then all of the sudden it shifted like nothing was binding and ... Came to a stop sign and when she took off again the tranny wouldn't shift out of 1st gear. It's a 98 with the 5.9. Just had a fluid and filter change done a week ago due to another (probably related) issue.
Have a 96 1500 4x4. wont shift out of 1st gear until about 3000rpm or more. and then only if i get of gas. Then it shift into 2nd. all other gears shift fine. Not a transmission mechanic, but have fount out that by replacing the filter and putting new fluid in generally helps on some transmissions slipping. The overdrive solenoid (and check ball) are not energized in first, second, third, or reverse gear. Jiffy Lube has a machine called a T-Tech that completely changes out the fluid - unlike a 4 qt. pan drop - which leaves 14 qts of old fluid. It costs $70, so it is a gamble prior to taking the transmission to the shop you mentioned, but if you did one of these T-Tech change outs prior to going you would know that the problem doesn't stem from dirty fluid causing sticky valves.
